I have first hand knowledge of this...
As a senior in high school, I was "awarded" the 'Most Likely To Become An MTV VJ' for my extensive knowledge and love for music resonated with many of my fellow class members. They witnessed my passion bloom and read the black and white words of my inner thoughts and feelings on albums and artists despite possible backlash. My only reward was that of free music which would suffice even to this day for nothing can ever trump discovering a new sound that gently pulls down your eyelids and guides your mind to places only the drug ecstacy can achieve. Having felt the glow of celebrity status along with offers to become just that, I put my talent in a box and packed it away for I refused to allow myself to be bought by promoting music that was horrible because they were "stars"...
No amount money in the word could buy my silence if a songs sucks or an album was a disappointment. I've experienced many flops from Garbage's "Beautiful Garbage" to Bloc Party's "Four" to Little Kim's "La Bella Mafia" to name a few. Growing up a child in the 80s, being teenager in the 90s and clubbing my way through the first decade of the 2k's, I've lived through some of the best years of music at its best. I can appreciate Classic Rock, nod my head to Country's beginnings, explain how Glam Rock paved the way to New Age and Industrial, Disco and Funk evolving into what is now known as EDM [aka Electronic Dance Music], dissect Rap and even R&B to sharing the history of Jazz. It's all art to me. How paintings and comics appeal to the eye, music is something I see in my ears...
Underneath the combination of beats, rhymes, hooks, lifts, drops, twists and turns lies a harmony (OR lack of in the case of most mainstream disasters that are thought to be as "hits" ... To each its own, I guess.) When I go out to bars, I like to look around as a radio hit plays overhead and watch the reactions. People sing along and even dance because we've been brainwashed to believe so... Luckily for me, I was able to walk in my bosses office every week and bring home handfuls of CDs from artists I've never heard of and have come to still blast. Had that not been the case, I would've fallen to prey as well. Drain STH, kHz and the Genitortures have allowed me to dig a little deeper and discover Mindless Self Indulgence (A band, who, up until about six or seven years ago managed to thrive on their cult following and live shows less the help of radio), Switchblade Symphony and Rasputina...
I now feel it's my mission to share my obsession with music in hopes of freeing songs from falling prey to the past. (Think of a frozen Han Solo.) Music should NEVER be timestamped and frozen. How else is my generation (along with those to follow) supposed to enjoy our [version of the] "Oldies" and "Adult Contemporary"? I, for one, refuse to be subjected to Justin Bieber, LMFAO, Skrillex, ten years from now while individuals not even a decade earlier such as The Cranberries, Ani DiFranco, Bad Boy Bill, The Lost Boyz (Mr. Cheeks), Bikini Kill, PJ Harvey, Poe, NIN, Tool, etc... are robbed of their glory and chance at being introduced to a whole new audience! It's bad enough that EDM's anchor genres, Techno, Trance and House have to fight for the main stage of Miami's annual massive due to catering to gasoline fueled "DJs" and teenagers on Molly in order to add more days, make more money and sell out: Ultra Music Festival (UMF) [Which is also of international status] as it competes with Global Gathering, Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), Creamfields and Holy Ship...
